Salem Red Sox News Release

Winston-Salem, NC (June 28, 2010) - All nine Salem Sox starters recorded at least one hit and the Sox scored in each of the first five innings in a 12-1 rout over the Winston-Salem Dash on Monday night at BB&T Ballpark. After scoring once in the first frame, Salem added four in the second, one in the third, and three in both the fourth and fifth innings to put the game away.

The top four hitters in the Sox lineup went a combined 9-for-16 on the night, highlighted by three hits and three RBI from Ryan Lavarnway. The three runs driven in improved Lavarnway's Carolina League leading total to 59 on the year, with five coming in the past two games. Mitch Dening added two doubles and three RBI while scoring three times and walking an additional three times. Oscar Tejeda drove in two runs in five at-bats and Jorge Padron also brought home two base runners.

Despite scoring 12 runs, it wasn't all about the offense on Monday night, as Mike Lee, Blake Maxwell and Kyle Fernandes combined to four-hit the Dash, with all four hits coming in the first two innings. Making his first start of the season, Lee went three innings and struck out three while allowing one run on four hits. Maxwell earned the win to improve to 4-1 with a season-high five innings of no-hit ball. Fernandes tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to slam the door.

The Sox peppered Winston-Salem starter Leroy Hunt for five runs on six hits in the first two innings. Salem got started early, as Tejeda drilled a two-out triple in the first to bring home Dening for an early 1-0 lead. After the Dash tied the game in the bottom of the first, Salem scored four times in the second thanks to a pair of two-RBI doubles from Dening and Lavarnway to make it 5-1 through two.

Dening added his second double of the night in the third to bring home Ryan Dent, giving the Sox a 6-1 lead after 3. Padron's two-RBI double brought home Hassan and Lavarnway in the fourth, while Tejeda scored on a wild pitch by Drew O'Neil. Salem finished its offensive outburst in the fifth with three more, surging the Sox ahead by 11

Salem pounded out 15 hits off Dash pitching, including an astounding eight for extra bases, seven of which were doubles. The Sox were also beneficiaries of 10 free passes from the Winston staff, which led to 28 of 50 batters reaching base on the night for Salem.

The Sox and Dash battle in the rubber game of the three-game set Tuesday night at 7:00 PM. Caleb Clay will look to back up his strong outing on Thursday with another solid start against Winston's Nate Jones.
