Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - An early 4-0 hole and a late 6-5 deficit couldn't stop the Clinton LumberKings from taking two of three from the Beloit Snappers. A three-run seventh inning highlighted by Henry Contreras's go-ahead sacrifice fly sent the Kings to an 8-6 victory at Alliant Energy Field.

Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez was touched up for six runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings in a less-than-stellar first start since appearing in the All-Star Game, but the Clinton offense always seemed to have an answer.

Trailing 4-0 in the second inning, Matt Cerione catalyzed the offense with a two-run double to left-center field, scoring both Contreras and Gabriel Noriega. Cerione would later score on a passed ball by catcher Danny Rams, making it a 4-3 Beloit lead.

In the third, the LumberKings took a 5-4 lead and chased Snappers' starter Edgar Ibarra from the game. Tim Morris lined a double inside the first-base bag to set the table for Kalian Sams. Sams worked the count to 3-2 before depositing an Ibarra pitch to the berm in left for his 14th home run of the season.

After cruising through scoreless third, fourth and fifth innings, Ramirez found himself in another jam in the sixth. He walked Josmil Pinto - just his fourth walk this season - and allowed a single to Steven Liddle, then let them both score on a single by Michale Gonzalez and a fielder's choice by Rams. Ramirez would exit, and left-hander Jose Jimenez induced Aaron Hicks into an inning-ending flyout to center.

The 6-5 Beloit lead would prove short-lived. Snappers' lefty Chris Armstrong (L, 0-1) gave up a double to Vinnie Catricala and a single to Morris, and an infield single by James Jones sent home the tying run. Contreras then lifted Armstrong's second pitch to shallow right, deep enough for Morris to tag and score.

After 2.1 scoreless innings from Jimenez (W, 2-3), right-hander Brandon Josselyn was summoned from the bullpen. Josselyn (S, 8) converted the save despite back-to-back two-out singles by James Beresford and Derek McCallum as he got Pinto to line out to Luis Nunez at second.

Cerione finished 2-for-4 with the double and two RBI to lead the Kings, while Sams went 1-for-3 with the home run and two RBI. Beloit's leading hitter was Liddle, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Hicks and Rams each plated two RBI.

The LumberKings (2-1, 39-33) continue the homestand tomorrow night as the Kane County Cougars (1-1) come to town for a three-game series. Left-hander Jon Hesketh (3-4, 4.12) makes his 14th start of the year, first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
