Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs fell behind early and fell just short in their comeback attempt, losing to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 5-4 on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Chiefs to 1-2 on the second half of the season.
The Kernels got on the board in the first off starter Rob Whitenack. Mike Trout led off with a double and advanced to third on a Matt Long bunt single. A wild pitch allowed Long to reach second before a Jean Segura sacrifice fly scored Trout and put Long at third. Casey Haerther grounded out to second base to bring in Long and give Cedar Rapids a 2-0 lead.
The Chiefs got one run back in the bottom of the inning off starter Fabio Martinez. Hak-Ju Lee walked to lead off and stole second base. Greg Rohan tripled to right center to bring Lee home and make it 2-1. Rohan was thrown out at the plate to end the inning while trying to score on a Justin Bour fly out to left.
The Kernels added to their lead in the fourth. Jose Jimenez led off with a single and advanced to second on a Lee fielding error that put Michael Wing on first. Justin Bass doubled to score Jimenez before a Carlos Ramirez double brought home two more to make it 5-1.
The Chiefs got another run in the bottom of the fourth still facing Martinez. Matt Cerda appeared to have been hit by a pitch but the home plate umpire said the ball did not make contact. Cerda then tripled down the right field line and scored on a Rohan groundout to second to make it 5-2.
The Chiefs added another run in the fifth. Jae-Hoon Ha singled and stole second base. On the steal attempt the pitch to the plate was wild and allowed Ha to reach third base. Jonathon Mota singled to score Ha and make it 5-3. Mario Mercedes and Lee each singled to load the bases with just one out but Martinez struck out Cerda and got Rohan to ground out to keep Cedar Rapids in front 5-3.
After leaving two on in the seventh and eighth the Chiefs threatened in the ninth against reliever Mike Kenney. Mario Mercedes singled and advanced to second on a Lee sacrifice bunt. Cerda singled before a Rohan single brought home Mercedes. An error after Rohan's single put Cerda, the tying run, on third. But Kenney got Bour to ground out to second to end the game.
Whitenack (6-5) pitched five innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits while striking out three. Jordan Latham pitched two shutout innings and gave up one walk and struck out two. Yohan Gonzalez pitched the final two innings and did not allow a run or a hit while walking three.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Mario Mercedes (C) - Mercedes went 4-for-4 and scored a run on Sunday. His four hits tied for the most by a Chiefs player this season and ties his career high, set in 2006 with Boise.
