Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs and Chicago Cubs have announced that All-Star right-hander Trey McNutt, who leads the Midwest League in ERA, has been promoted to Advanced-A Daytona of the Florida State League. McNutt, who started the All-Star game on Tuesday, leaves the Chiefs with a 6-0 record and a 1.51 ERA which is tops in the MWL. Manolin DeLeon returns to the Chiefs bullpen from Extended Spring Training while catcher Luis Flores drops down from Daytona to fill a vacant spot on the roster.
McNutt, 20, was the Chiefs ace through the first half of the season and the teams was 12-1 in his 13 starts this season. A native of Haleyville, AL, McNutt was drafted in the 32nd round of the 2009 draft out of Shelton State Community College in Alabama. He struck out 70 batters in 59 2/3 innings this season while walking 24 and not surrendering a home run. McNutt is expected to start for Daytona Monday night after being bumped from his regular Sunday slot in Peoria to instead board an early morning flight for Florida. McNutt became the first Chiefs pitcher to strike out 10 batters in one game since 2007 when he fanned 10 Burlington Bees in his final start of the first half on June 16. He twice pitched six innings and only allowed more than one earned run in a game one time, when he gave up four at Kane County on May 7. McNutt had been in line to start the July 7 Chiefs game against the Cougars at Wrigley Field, which would have been his third start of the second half.
DeLeon was 5-3 with a 2.84 ERA in 31 appearances out of the Chiefs bullpen in 2009. The right-hander struck out 47 and walked 17 in 50 2/3 innings while securing two saves in four chances. He has not pitched yet in 2010 while recovering from an injury suffered in Spring Training. A 23-year-old Dominican native, DeLeon held Midwest League batters to a .197 average last season and allowed just four of 15 inherited runners to score.
Flores returns to Peoria for the third time and will be one of three catchers on the roster. A 7th round pick in 2008 out of Oklahoma State University, Flores caught for the Chiefs in both 2008 and 2009. This season he started at Extended Spring Training before joining Daytona's roster in late May. In 10 games for the Cubs he was 7-for-23 for a .304 average with three doubles and a triple. Last season Flores hit .208 for the Chiefs in 18 games before being promoted to Daytona in May. He hit .169 in 49 games for Daytona with 12 RBI. Flores began his pro career with Boise in 2008 hitting .167 in nine games before a July 2008 promotion to Peoria. With the Chiefs in 33 games in 2008 he hit .189 with a homer and 13 RBI. For his career the 23-year-old Texas native has played in 119 games batting .189 with three homers, 16 doubles, 30 RBI and 26 runs scored.
DeLeon will be in uniform for Sunday afternoon's game against Cedar Rapids but Flores will arrive in Peoria later in the day giving the Chiefs 24 players against the Kernels. Flores will be ready for the Monday contest at Burlington that begins a six-game road trip.
