Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs split a doubleheader with the Reading Phillies Saturday night at Hadlock Field in front of 5,106 fans. Casey Kelly picked-up his first career Double-A win as Portland shutout Reading 6-0 in game one. In game two Reading rallied from a four run deficit to defeat the Sea Dogs 8-5.
In game one, Kelly (1-3) had the best outing of his Double-A career tossing a season high six shutout innings scattering four hits, walking one and striking out four to pick-up the win.
Kelly, the top pitching prospect in the Red Sox organization according to Baseball America, got plenty of support from the Sea Dogs offense. Portland jumped on the board 1-0 in the first inning on a Luis Exposito RBI single. Exposito would add a sacrifice fly in the sixth to score Nate Spears.
Ray Chang and Anthony Rizzo both went deep in the winning effort. Chang hit a three run homer in the second as Portland extended the lead to 4-0 over the R-Phils and Anthony Rizzo added a solo shot in the fifth.
Jason Rice worked the final inning for the Sea Dogs to preserve the shutout.
Vance Worley (4-3) suffered the loss tossing five innings allowing five runs on nine hits.
In game two the Reading Phillies erased a four run deficit by scoring a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at four and send the game into extra frames. Kevin Mahar got the scoring starting for Reading with a two run homer in the sixth. Domonic Brown's RBI double drove home the tying run in the seventh.
The score remained tie until the ninth inning when the Phillies put up a four spot. Once again, it was Brown who provided the big hit, an RBI single to give Reading the 5-4 lead.
All eight Reading runs (six earned) came off Portland reliever Eammon Portice. Portice (3-4) surrendered ten hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Portland starter Jeremy Kehrt did not factor into the decision despite tossing the best game of his brief three game Double-A career. Kehrt fired five shutout innings allowing three hits, walking three and recording one strikeout.
Yamaico Navarro provided the bulk of the offense in game two for Portland with a 2-for-4 performance with three RBI. Navarro singled home Ryan Khoury and Rizzo in the first to give Portland a quick 2-0 lead. The Sea Dogs would strike for two more runs in the third on RBI doubles by Chang and Navarro.
Michael Schwimer(3-2) picks-up the game two win for Reading tossing three scoreless innings.
The Sea Dogs and Phillies conclude the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs have yet to announce a starter. Reading righty Josh Fogg (0-0) gets the start for the Phillies. Sunday is National Shriners Awareness Day at Hadlock Field.
