Greenville Drive News Release
Jordan Flasher gave up the winning run in the top of the 15th inning as Greenville lost to Augusta 8-6 Saturday at Fluor Field. Daniel Cook singled in Nick Liles with one out in the 15th, and Chris Dominguez added an RBI single off of Flasher (3-1).
Hector Correa (1-0) got the win for Augusta, and Brian Irving put the Drive down in order in the bottom half of the 15th to earn his first save for the GreenJackets.
The Drive loaded the bases twice in the extra innings, but could not cross the plate, as Zach Gentile grounded into a 6-2-3 double play to end the 10th and Ronald Bermudez grounded out to the shortstop to end the 11th.
Augusta got the scoring going with three runs in the third inning after being silenced in the first two innings. Sharlon Schoop and Ryan Lollis each had singles before leadoff man Evan Crawford drove a triple into right field. A sacrifice fly by Ryan Cavan drove in Crawford for the third run of the inning.
Augusta added a run in the fifth when Crawford walked, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Chris Dominguez. The GreenJackets scored again when Tommy Joseph was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, moved to second on a single, and scored on a single by Liles.
Augusta made the score 6-0 in the seventh inning when Cavan walked, moved to second on a groundout, and then scored on an RBI single by Joseph.
The Drive began their comeback in the bottom half of the seventh when Bermudez hit a one-out single, moved to third on Dan Butler's double, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Reynaldo Rodriguez. Zach Gentile ended the inning with a fly out to left field, stranding Butler on second.
Butler reached base in five of his seven plate appearances, tallying two singles, two doubles, one walk, and reaching on an error.
In the eighth, the Drive erupted for five runs to tie the game as nine consecutive batters reached base to start the inning. Joantoni Garcia, who started the inning with a double, struck out with runners on the corners to end the rally. Quick ninth inning work by both teams put the game into extra innings.
Kendal Volz allowed four runs and nine hits in five innings in his start for the Drive. Augusta starter BJ Salisbury held the Drive offense in check through his first seven innings, allowing just four hits and one run before the eighth inning rally.
The Drive will aim to split the series against the first-place GreenJackets by sending southpaw Manuel Rivera (2-3, 2.92 ERA) to face Augusta right-hander Jeremy Toole (0-0, 1.93 ERA) in Sunday's matinee game. First pitch between the two teams is scheduled for 4:05pm.
In addition, tomorrow is Family FunDay at Fluor Field, where kids 12 and under get to run the bases following the game. For more information regarding single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
