Lexington Legends News Release
David Duncan allowed one hit in five innings in his first start of the season, and Kody Hinze and Jose Altuve homered as the Lexington Legends shut out the Greenville Drive 4-0 Monday at Applebee's Park.
Duncan, a lefthander who had been sidelined with soreness in his left shoulder, struck out four and did not walk a batter. He retired the first 11 batters he faced before Jeremy Hazelbaker bunted for a hit with two outs in the fourth inning.
After leaving the bases loaded in the first inning and two on in the second, the Legends broke through in the third against Greenville starter Manuel Rivera. J.D. Martinez, who had three hits in the game and is second in the South Atlantic League in batting at .357, led off with a single. Jake Goebbert also singled, sending Martinez to second. Hinze followed with a double, scoring Martinez and moving Goebbert to third. Jonathan Meyer then walked to load the bases. The runners held as Rene Garcia flied out to short right field, but Goebbert scored when Brian Kemp hit into a force play, giving the Legends a 2-0 lead.
Solo homers by Altuve in the sixth inning and Hinze in the seventh provided the final two runs for Lexington. Hinze leads the SAL in home runs with 10 and RBI with 40, and is sixth in batting average at .333.
Greenville's best scoring threat came in the seventh inning against Alvino, but with one out and the bases loaded, Altuve started an inning-ending double play on a ground ball hit by Dan Butler.
Duncan (1-0) got the win in the Legends first shutout victory of the year. Rivera (2-3) was the losing pitcher. Wander Alvino and Jose Trinidad each pitched two scoreless innings in relief for Lexington.
The Legends and Drive will play the third game of the four-game series Tuesday night at Applebee's Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
