Portland Sea Dogs News Release

(Reading, PA), After Thursday night's thrilling win on opening night, the Portland Sea Dogs were unable to make it two in a row, falling 7-5 at the hands of the Reading Phillies. The game was tied at five in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Reading picked up a pair of runs, making a winner out of reliever Michael Stutes.

For the second night in a row, the Sea Dogs scored first, as Ryan Kalish received a bases loaded walk in the top of the second, scoring Chih-Hsien Chiang. Portland's lead didn't last long, as the Phillies took a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning, capped off by Mike Spidale's two-run double.

The Sea Dogs had an answer for Reading's rally in the top of the third, when Lars Anderson and Yamaico Navarro picked up back-to-back run-scoring hits, tying the score at three. The next batter was Chiang, who put the visitors back on top with an RBI groundout to second, driving in Anderson.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Phillies tied the game, as Kevin Mahar drove a 3-2 pitch over the center field wall.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Reading went ahead by a run on a bloop single by Spidale - his third RBI of the night. Portland was quick to answer, getting that run back in the top of the eighth on a solo homer by Chiang.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Phillies retook the lead. Domonic Brown started things off with a one-out single, stole second, and ultimately scored on Tagg Bozied's single to right. Two batters later, Bozied found his way to home plate, as Brandon Pinckney doubled to right.

Reading closer Sergio Escalona walked a pair of batters in the top of the ninth, but avoided further trouble, striking out two, including Jose Iglesias, which ended the ball game.

Both starting pitchers received no-decisions. For Portland, Ryne Miller went five innings, allowing three hits, four runs, and two walks, while tying a career-high with eight strikeouts. Phillippe Aumont also went five innings for Reading, allowing seven hits, four runs, and three walks, while striking out three.

Despite allowing one run out of the bullpen, Michael Stutes picked up the win for the Phillies. Bryce Cox suffered the loss for the Sea Dogs, allowing two runs (one earned) in the eighth.

Game three of this four-game series takes place on Saturday at 6:05. Kyle Weiland will make his Double-A debut for Portland, going up against Reading's Michael Cisco.
