Hughes, Curve keep Senators at bay

Altoona Curve News Release

CURVE, Pa. - Offense was aplenty for the Curve tonight as they racked up six runs on 12 hits in back of a solid start by Jared Hughes (1-0) to claim their second victory over the Harrisburg Senators, 6-1 at Blair County Ballpark.

Hughes, in his first start since mid-May 2009, tossed five frames and permitted just one run on five hits while striking out four.

Altoona scored first in the contest and would never look back as they plated two runs in the third off Senators starter Aaron Thompson (0-1). With two away, Gorkys Hernandez and Chase d'Arnaud singled back-to-back to set the dish for Jordy Mercer, who doubled them both in to give Altoona the two-run advantage.

Hughes, who retired the first 11 men he faced, permitted a two-out home run to Leonard Davis in the fourth to cut the lead to one but would flex no further as it would be the only Harrisburg run of the evening.

Coming to the support of its pitcher, the Curve answered right back in the fourth with three more runs to open up a 5-1 advantage over the Senators. Altoona sent eight men to the plate in the inning and received run-scoring hits from Matt Hague, Hernandez and d'Arnaud.

Josh Harrison singled in Altoona's final run of the game in the seventh when he plated Mercer with a single up the middle.

The bullpen was superb once again for manager Matt Walbeck in tonight's contest as they pitched four innings of scoreless relief. Tony Watson, who was in his first action since May of last season, pitched two scoreless innings while Dustin Molleken and Jeff Sues each added a scoreless inning of relief.

Altoona (2-0) will turn the ball over to RHP Tim Alderson (NR) on Saturday night as they try to make it three in a row over Harrisburg (0-2). The Senators will counter with lefty Tom Milone (NR) with the first pitch slated for 5 p.m. from Blair County Ballpark.

It is the first Community Collection Day of the season on Saturday night and the Curve are asking that you bring out pet food to benefit the Central PA Humane Society. Fireworks will follow the Curve-Senators contest and kids will also have an opportunity to run the bases. For tickets and more information, visit www.AltoonaCurve.com or call 877.99.CURVE
