TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Bowie Baysox will meet in game two of a four-game series...The Flying Squirrels and Baysox will complete their suspended contest from last and play tonight's scheduled game - a seven-inning contest - afterwards.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Left-hander Clayton Tanner gets the start for the Flying Squirrels in game two of the four-game series...Making his Double-A debut...Rated as the #23 prospect in the SFG farm system entering 2010 according to Baseball America...Appeared in one 2010 ML Spring Training game with SFG...Worked a scoreless inning, giving up two and striking out a pair...Had a career-year with Adv-A SJG in 2009 setting new career-highs in strikeouts (121) and innings pitched (139.1)...Posted a career-best 3.17 ERA (3rd lowest in the CAL) and matched a career-high with 12 wins...Set a career-high by striking out 13 Modesto Nuts on June 12th...Held left-handed batters to just a .224 batting average (32-for-143)...Allowed 18 HR (17/18 to RHH) in the hitter-friendly CAL (T-5th most)...Made two post season starts and gave up just one run on 14 hits in 14.0 IP...Struck out 13 batters and did not issue a walk...Won CAL title...Spent 2008 with Adv-A SJG...Made a career-high 24 starts and went 10-8 with a 3.69 ERA...Gave up 124 hits in 117.0 innings of work (.274 BAA)...Struck out 84 and walked 39...Allowed just one HR in hitter friendly CAL...Had a solid season with Low-A AUG in 2007 going 12-8 with a 3.59 ERA in 27G/23GS...Allowed 147 hits in 135.1 innings of work (.284 BAA)...Struck out 104 batters and walked 44...Name a SAL mid season All-Star...Made pro debut in 2006 with SS-A SKV...Appeared in 13 games, all in relief, and went 2-2 with a 3.46 ERA...Struck out 25 batters in 26 innings of work...Held opposing hitters to just a .183 BAA...Appeared in one game during the NWL playoffs...Gave up one run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk in three innings of work...Won NWL title...Selected by SFG in the 3rd round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.
Right-hander Steve Johnson gets the nod in game two of the series for the Baysox...Traded from LAD along with INF Josh Bell to BAL in exchange for LHP George Sherrill...Appeared in one ML Spring Training game with BAL giving up a run on a hit with one strikeout and four walks...Made seven starts with Bowie in 2009 following the trade and went 3-2 with a 2.84 ERA...Struck out 37 and walked 17 in 38.0 IP...Held opponents to a .179 average against...Made two starts with Double-A CHA prior to trade...Went 1-1 with a 1.69 ERA with 15 K in 10.2 IP...Started 2009 with Adv-A INE and registered an 8-4 record with a 3.82 ERA in 18G/16GS...Struck out 102 batters in 96.2 IP...Rated as the #15 prospect in the LAD farm system entering the 2009...Originally selected by the LAD in the 13th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft...Native of Kingsville, Md....Is the son of former BAL pitcher and current Orioles broadcaster Dave Johnson.
GIANT YEAR: 14 members of Flying Squirrels Opening Day roster spent time with Adv-A San Jose in 2009...The group, managed by Andy Skeels, finished the regular season with a 93-47 record...The 93 wins were the second-most in all of MiLB...Seven members of the team (Craig Clark, Daryl Maday, David Mixon, Daniel Turpen, Nick Noonan, Skyler Stromsmoe, and Thomas Neal) spent time with Skeels in Low-A Augusta in 2008 where the team went 88-50 and won the SAL championship...The 181 wins are the most over the last two years for a manager in MiLB...The San Francisco Giants farm system had the highest winning percentage in MLB.
PROSPECTING THE SQUIRRELS: Eight members of the inaugural Flying Squirrels roster are ranked in the top-30 prospects in the San Francisco Giants farm system according to Baseball America...Group includes OF Thomas Neal (#4), OF Roger Kieschnick (#7), INF Brandon Crawford (#9), INF Nick Noonan (#11), OF Darren Ford (#13), INF Connor Gillaspie (#17), LHP Clayton Tanner (#23), and LHP Craig Clark (#26)...Noonan (#32 overall), Gillaspie (#37 overall), and C Jackson Williams (#43 overall) are all former 1st round draft choices.
BIG LEAGUE: 15 members of the Flying Squirrels 24-man roster spent time in big league camp with the San Francisco Giants (LHP Craig Clark, RHP Rafael Cova, RHP Mike MacDonald, RHP Tony Pena Jr., LHP Clayton Tanner, RHP Daniel Turpen, C Jackson Williams, SS Brandon Crawford, 3B Connor Gillaspie, 2B Nick Noonan, INF Sharlon Schoop, OF Darren Ford, OF Tyler Graham, OF Roger Kieschnick, & OF Thomas Neal)... Ford and Gillaspie are both members of the Giants 40-Man roster...Additionally, four members of the 24-man roster (Pena Jr., LHP Andy Sisco, Gillaspie, & OF Clay Timpner) have spent time in the Major Leagues prior to the 2010 season.
TAKING FLIGHT: 2010 marks the inaugural season in Richmond Flying Squirrels history...After hosting the Atlanta Braves Triple-A affiliate for 43 years, the city of Richmond, Va., went without baseball in 2009...The move of the Connecticut Defenders to Richmond was announced September 22, 2009...The nickname "Flying Squirrels" was chosen from over 15,000 entries in a name-the-team contest and was announced October 14, 2009...The Flying Squirrels' logos and word marks were unveiled on December 1, 2009...Over $2 million in renovations have gone into the Flying Squirrels home - The Diamond - including 3,300 new seats in the lower seating bowl, renovated concession stands and clubhouses, a 2,800 square-foot merchandise store, the construction of an indoor batting tunnel, a new video board, new concourse sound system, and signage...The Flying Squirrels celebrate their home opener on Thursday April 15th, as the club hosts the Reading Phillies.
