ASHEVILLE, NC - The defending SAL Champs wasted no time getting off to a strong start in 2010.

The BlueClaws scored eight runs in the first inning off Asheville Tourists starter Wes Musick (0-1) en route to a 10-7 win.

Lakewood picked up seven hits in the top of the first, including a Darin Ruf three-run homer to give starter Nick Hernandez (1-0) an early cushion and chase Musick two outs into the game.

Hernandez would end up needing the run support. Asheville mounted their comeback in the middle innings, scoring two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth. Hernandez gave up two home runs between the two innings, which was the same amount he surrendered all last season at Williamsport. He made it through six innings, giving up eight hits, six runs (just two earned) and striking out four.

Siulman Lebron stepped in for Hernandez and pitched two solid innings, giving up just one hit and striking out three. Eric Massingham then worked out of a jam in the ninth to lock up the win.

Jiwan James picked up two hits and drove in two runs in the BlueClaws big first inning. Ruf finished with two hits and four RBIs to lead the way offensively.

The BlueClaws will again face the Tourists Friday night, as Jarred Cosart takes on Dan Perkins. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm.
