
Brandon Wheat Kings' Matt Calvert Named Boston Pizza WHL Player Of The Week

CALGARY, AB. - For the second time this season, the BOSTON PIZZA WHL Player of the Week is forward Matt Calvert of the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Calvert picked up 11 points, scoring five goals and six assists to go with a +9 rating, in three games over the past week, helping the Wheat Kings post a 3-0 record in that span.
On Wednesday, March 10th, the Wheat Kings hosted the Moose Jaw Warriors. Calvert scored twice and added three assists leading the Wheat Kings to an 8-2 win over the Warriors. On Friday, March 12th, the Wheat Kings were in Regina to face the Pats. Calvert scored his third career hat-trick and added a pair of assists in the Wheat Kings 9-3 victory over the Pats; he was also named the games 2nd Star. On Saturday, March 13th, the Wheat Kings hosted the Pats for the back half of their home-and-home series to wrap up the regular season. Calvert nabbed one assist as the Wheat Kings downed the Pats 3-1.
With11 points over his last three games Calvert finishes the 2009-10 regular season sitting 4th among WHL scorers with 99 points (47 goals, 52 assists) in 68 games played. The Brandon Wheat Kings head into the 2010 WHL Playoffs on an eight game win streak finishing second in the WHL Eastern Conference with a 50-18-1-3 record for 104 points. The Wheat Kings will face the Swift Current Broncos in the Husky WHL Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals best-of-seven series starting Friday night in Brandon.
Calvert, a Brandon, Manitoba native in his 20 year-old season, has spent his entire WHL career with the Wheat Kings. A fifth round selection of the Columbus Blue Jackets at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Calvert was offered his first professional contract this past summer but chose to return to the Wheat Kings for his final season of WHL eligibility and play for his hometown team at the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup in Brandon.
The WHL has also nominated Mac Carruth of the Portland Winterhawks for the CHL Goaltender of the Week Award. Carruth posted a 3-0-0-0 record this past week with one shut-out, stopping 91 of 95 shots faced for a 1.300 goals-against average and 0.958 save percentage. Carruth, a native of Shorewood, Minnesota, is playing his first season in the WHL having appeared in 26 games posting a 14-9-1-0 record.
