Harris Leads Birds to Win

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (18-24) stormed back in the final innings to come away with an 8-7 win over the El Paso Diablos (18-24) on Sunday afternoon at Sioux Falls Stadium. Cory Harris went 2-for-4 with four RBI to lead the Canaries.

El Paso scored first, getting on the scoreboard in the third inning. Eddy Rodriguez and Hector Bernal opened the inning with back-to-back singles. After Kennard Bibbs sacrificed the runners over, Arnoldo Ponce came to the plate and hit a ground ball that was misplayed by Canaries shortstop Tim Hutting. Rodriguez scored on the play and the Diablos took a 1-0 lead.

The Canaries tied the game in the fourth. Tim Hutting singled and was sacrificed to second by Joe Anthonsen. With two outs, Trevor Lawhorn singled to score Hutting and tie the game, 1-1.

The Diablos got the lead back when Eddy Rodriguez hit his third home run of the year in the top of the fifth inning. However in the bottom of the fifth, the Canaries again tied the game. Ken Lup walked with one out and got to second on a bunt single by Jared Lemieux. Tim Hutting followed with his third hit of the game, a single to score Lup and even the score at 2-2.

El Paso scored four runs on two home runs in the top of the seventh inning. Hector Bernal doubled before Arnoldo Ponce hit his third home run of the season to give the Diablos a 4-2 lead. Following a Jorge Alvarez single, Juan Camacho homered for the second night in a row. Camacho's fourth homer of the season made it 6-2 in favor of El Paso.

The Birds came back with three in the bottom of the seventh. With two on, Joe Anthonsen doubled to score Lemieux and make it a 6-3 game. Cory Harris followed with a two-run single to pull the Canaries within one, 6-5.

After El Paso got a run in the top of the eighth, the Canaries offense went back to work trailing by two, 7-5 in the bottom of the inning. The bases were loaded on a single by J.D. Reininger and walks to Lemieux and Hutting. After Anthonsen struck out, Harris came up with two outs. For the second straight inning, Harris delivered a two-run single. As Reininger and Lemieux scored the game was tied, 7-7. Reggie Taylor followed with a single of his own, scoring Tim Hutting, and giving the Canaries their first lead of the game, 8-7.

Kris Regas came on to close the game out in the ninth inning. Regas struck out Juan Camacho, but Adam Hale followed with a walk. David Washington came in to pinch run for Hale, and after Mike Provencher struck out, Washington tried to steal second. Ken Lup threw out Washington to end the ballgame, closing out an 8-7 win.

Aaron Cotter (1-0) got the win in relief for the Canaries, and Regas picked up his 14th save of the year to tie Dustin Cameron for the American Association lead. On the Diablos side, Tony Pluta (1-2) suffered the loss.

The Birds hit the road for Pensacola where they will begin a three-game series on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. The Canaries return home to open the second half against the Fort Worth Cats on Tuesday, July 7 at 7:05 p.m. The second-half opener will feature a "Fly Away Giveaway" presented by Allegiant Air.
