St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (May 22, 2009) - The St. Paul saints have sold the contract of Craig Brazell to the Hanshin Tigers, a Nippon Professional Baseball team based in Japan.
The 29-year-old Brazell was thriving at third base for the Saints, batting .581 in his seven game stint. The Montgomery, Alabama native also had four home runs and 12 RBI's in that span, earning him the American Association hitter of the week (for the week ending May 17).
"My time in St. Paul was great," said Brazell. "My three coaches, George, Lamarr and Verdugo were tremendous. The friendships I built here meant a lot to me and I will definitely be keeping an eye on this team because there are some great ballplayers out there."
Brazell returns to Japan after spending 2008 with the Seibu Lions. He hit 27 home runs and had 87 RBI's for the Pacific League champions. Brazell has had two short stays in Major League Baseball, playing for the New York Mets in 2004 and the Kansas City Royals in 2007.
The Hanshin Tigers are known as the Japanese Red Sox and their dedicated fan base is well recognized throughout the country. He adds to the list of MLB alumni who have jetted overseas to play for Hanshin. Mike Greenwell, Cecil Fielder and Rob Deer all spent time with the Hanshin Tigers.
The Saints roster now stands at 23 players, 12 position players and 11 pitchers. Teams can carry up to 24 players, but must be down to the league maximum of 22 two weeks after the beginning of the season.
