Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV (May 20, 2009) - Justin DeFratus and Ryan Bergh combined to toss three and two-thirds scoreless innings of one hit relief for Lakewood on Wednesday night at Appalachian Power Park as the BlueClaws came away with a 4-3 victory over the West Virginia Power.
West Virginia took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Robbie Grossman scored on Chase D'Arnaud's sacrifice fly. The Power held that lead until Lakewood plated three runs in the top of the fifth, and never trailed again. With a runner on third and one out, Harold Garcia hit a ground ball to third baseman Jeremy Farrell who threw the ball to home plate in an attempt to nail the runner, but the ball was dropped by catcher Andrew Walker, allowing Troy Hanzawa to score. Run scoring doubles from Anthony Gose and Travis D'Arnaud followed to give Lakewood the lead.
The Power scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie it up. Greg Picart scored on a passed ball in the fifth to bring the Power within a run. West Virginia had runners at the corners with nobody out in the inning, but could not score. One inning later, Robbie Grossman's groundout scored Marcus Davis to tie the game. Zach Collier reached on a fielder's choice with one out in the seventh inning and brought in the go-ahead run for the BlueClaws.
DeFratus (2-0) held the Power scoreless and allowed just a hit over an inning and two thirds of relief to snag the victory while Ryan Bergh (6) pitched two scoreless innings to score the save. Wilson Ortiz (0-1) allowed a run on three hits over two and a third and was tagged with the loss. Rudy Owens struck out nine batters over four and two-thirds for the Power.
West Virginia fell to 13-26 after the loss, and the BlueClaws improved to 23-15 with the win. Austin McClune led the offensive attack for the Power with a 3-for-5 performance and Greg Picart went 2-for-3, reaching three times in five trips. West Virginia left nine men on base for the second night in a row.
West Virginia will finish the four game series with the Lakewood BlueClaws at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday night. Right hander Kyle McPherson (2-1, 7.17) will start for the Power and the BlueClaws will counter with right hander Jesus Sanchez (1-2, 4.97). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
