Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds struck for three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth en route to the 6-2 win against the Hickory Crawdads before 872 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Wednesday. The win for the Shorebirds snapped their eight-game losing skid, including the first two games of the series in Hickory, which the Crawdads won.
Crawdads starter LHP Martin Perez surrendered two runs (one earned) in the second inning to allow Delmarva (18-18) to take the early 2-0 lead. Perez dealt five innings on the game, allowing only the two runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts in the no-decision.
Hickory (20-19) came right back with a run in the bottom of the second and another in the third, to tie it at 2-2. LF Timmy Rodriguez led the second inning off with a single and advanced to third on C Doug Hogan's double. SS Jake Kaase then grounded out to second base, but, in doing so, brought in Rodriguez from third to get the Crawdads on the board. 3B Mike Hollander, who went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to six games, led the third inning off with a double, before RF Mike Bianucci plated him with an RBI double to knot the score at two runs apiece.
The 2-2 tie remained intact until the top of the eighth inning when DH Elvin Polanco hit a pitch from RHP Jake Brigham (1-2, 4.20) over the right-field wall for a two-run shot to give the Shorebirds a 4-2 lead. Brigham surrendered one more in the eighth, allowing three runs on four hits in three innings of work, along with three walks and three strikeouts. He was tagged with the loss on the evening. The Shorebirds added a run in the ninth off RHP Cody Eppley to account for the 6-2 final score. RHP Raul Rivero (3-0, 2.05) earned the win and RHP Patrick Egan registered the save for the Shorebirds.
