Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
April 28, 2009 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels dropped the first game of a DH at O'Brien Field in Peoria by the score of 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon. The Chiefs scored the only run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Rebel Ridling in the third inning after Josh Harrison doubled and went to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Kernels starter Manuel Flores (1-2).
Flores pitched a complete game, giving up an unearned run on just five hits and striking out four. The Kernels were held to just two hits by Peoria starter Chris Carpenter (1-1) as he allowed three walks and struck out three. Erik Hamren allowed a hit but kept the Kernels off the board for his fourth save of the season.
Anel De Los Santos had two of the Kernels three hits. Tyson Auer led off the game with a single, but the Kernels were 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position. It's the first time this season the Kernels have been shut out.
Game two of Tuesday's DH sees RHP Manuarys Correa start for the Kernels against Chris Archer.
The Kernels return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, April 29 and open a six game home stand with West Michigan and Peoria. Tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com
