Sens snag point in shootout loss to Penuins

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators received a stellar performance from netminder Jeff Glass, who had a career high 47 saves, but were edged by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a shootout 3-2 Wednesday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Penguins got the scoring started early in the first period when Miroslav Satan received a pass which initiated a 2-on-1 break. Satan passed the puck across the ice in front of the net to Jeff Taffe, who beat Glass on the blocker side to make it a 1-0 game.
The B-Sens tied up the game late in the first period when Zack Smith and Danny Bois started a 2-on-1 break of their own. Smith passed to Bois who fired a back-hander on net which Penguins netminder John Curry initially saved but lost the rebound. The puck kicked out to Derek Smith who was trailing the play, and he buried the puck home for his sixth goal of the season.
The second period saw a combined 21 shots between the two teams, but no scoring. The B-Sens killed off two penalties while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton killed off one.
Binghamton took the lead in the third period with a power-play goal scored by Zack Smith, his second point of the game and 22nd goal of the season. Marc Cavosie passed to Danny Bois, who carried it into the Penguins zone and put the puck on net. Smith picked up the rebound and fired it past Curry.
The Penguins answered just over a minute later tying the game at two with a power-play goal of their own. The puck circled around behind the net to Jeff Taffe who passed to a wide open Mark Letestu. Letestu then wristed a shot over a diving Glass at the left post.
The third period came to an end with the score still 2-2 and the overtime period saw no change as well which led to the second straight shootout for the B-Sens. Greg Mauldin was first to shoot for Binghamton and he put a nice forehand to backhand move on Curry giving his team the early 1-0 advantage in the shootout.
Miroslav Satan answered for the Penguins, however, tying the shootout at one. Denis Hamel was next for the B-Sens, but was denied by the post. The next two Penguins scored and Ilya Zubov and Zack Smith failed to score for the B-Sens, which gave the Penguins the 3-2 shootout win.
The B-Sens (39-27-5-4, 87 pts.) return to action Friday night at 7:35 p.m. to face the Rochester American at Blue Cross Arena.
