(Portland, ME) - The Portland Sea Dogs (72-62) swept a doubleheader from the New Britain Rock Cats (59-76), 6-4 and 7-2, Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. With the two wins for the Sea Dogs and Binghamton's loss in New Hampshire, the Sea Dogs magic number is four to clinch the second playoff spot in the Northern Division.

The Sea Dogs scored 10 of 13 runs in the twinbill with two outs, including four in the second inning of game two. Dave Gassner (8-5) worked six strong innings on four hits and two runs to win his 7th consecutive start. Chad Rhoades pitched a perfect ninth to secure Portland's 34th win at Hadlock Field and the team's second twinbill sweept of the year.

Argenis Diaz (5-for-7, 2 RBI) led off the bottom of the first in game two with a solo-homer off Jason Miller. Portland added four runs with two outs off Miller in the second inning on a 2-run homer by Josh Reddick and a 2-run triple by Jorge Jimenez. The combination of Diaz and Jimenez went 10-for-15, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored on the night.

Miller allowed six runs on eight hits in three innings to take his 3rd loss of the year and his 2nd to Portland. The ‘Dogs added a run in the third and fourth innings on a sac-fly by Tony Granadillo and a run-scoring triple by Zach Daeges. Brandon Roberts blasted a 2-run homer off Gassner in the fifth inning for New Britain's only runs.

In the opener, the Sea Dogs scored twice in the fourth inning on a fielder's choice by Daeges and a run-scoring double by Lars Anderson to beat New Britain 6-4. Daeges went 3-for-4 and drove in two with a double in the second inning.

Mike James (5-4) worked two scoreless innings of relief on one hit to earn the win for Portland. Daniel Bard notched his 7th save with a perfect ninth, including back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Yohan Pino (6-7) suffered the loss for New Britain, yielding nine hits and six runs over 3.2 IP. Pino gave up four runs in the second inning, all with two outs. Portland starter Ryne Lawson lasted four innings but walked three on seven hits and gave up four runs.

The Rock Cats scored twice in the second inning off Lawson. Matt Tolbert, who is on a Major League Rehab assignment with the Twins, laced a 2-run single to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead. The 'Dogs came back in their half of the second with four runs off Pino - all with two outs. Mickey Hall was plunked on the helmet with an 0-2 pitch and Jorge Jimenez singled on an 0-2 pitch to set up Argenis Diaz's RBI double off the Maine Monster. Daeges followed with a 2-run double and Aaron Bates delivered an RBI single. New Britain would score twice in the third inning to tie the game at four. Toby Gardenhire provided a run-scoring ground out and Drew Butera cracked an RBI double.

The two teams combined to score eight of the game's 10 runs with two outs.

Notes...Zach Daeges needs three doubles (currently has 34) to break Brandon Moss's franchise record for most doubles in one year...Portland hit .389 (21-for-54) in the two games and scored 10 of 13 runs with two outs.
