
Kernels hold on for 6-5 victory over Chiefs â Magic number now seven

The Cedar Rapids Kernels held off a Peoria rally in the ninth inning as they won their second game in a row, 6-5, over the Chiefs on Friday night at O'Brien Field. The win, coupled with losses by Quad Cities and Beloit reduces the Kernels 'magic number' to seven to clinch the MWL Western Division wild card spot.
Kernels starter Robert Fish (9-4) allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out eight over 6.1 innings for the win. Francis Cabrera and Ysmael Carmona combined to allow a run on two hits in 1.2 innings of work and Eddie McKiernan came on to preserve the win and notch his 19th save of the season.
Jay Brossman and Jeremy Moore led the Kernel offense as Brossman was 2-4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI and Jeremy Moore was 2-5 with a 2 run homer, his 16th of the season. Gabe Jacobo was 1-4 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and Julio Perez was 2-3 with a double and RBI.
Peoria starter Kevin Kreier (5-9) allowed five runs on nine hits over six innings in taking the loss. Brandon Guyer was 3-5 with a double, HR and 2 RBI to lead the Peoria offense.
