Ely Named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week

August 4, 2008 - Carolina League (CarL) Winston-Salem Dash

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - For the second time this season, Winston-Salem Warthogs starting pitcher John Ely was recognized as the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week. Ely, the third round draft pick of the White Sox in 2007 out of Miami (OH) University, has won his last three starts including both contests this past week.

In his first outing last week, the right-hander limited Lynchburg to two runs (one earned) on just two hits while striking out five in the Warthogs three-game sweep of the Hillcats. Ely followed that performance with six shutout innings against Potomac. He surrendered four hits and did not allow a walk, while striking out five in helping Winston-Salem split a four-game series with the first-place Nationals.

The former Redhawk previously garnered the honor for the week of June 9-15 when he pitched seven shutout innings on June 12 in Wilmington. He allowed just one hit and collected eight strikeouts without walking a batter to earn the win in a 1-0 blanking of the Blue Rocks.

The Homewood, Ill. native improved to 6-11 on the season with a 4.83 ERA. He currently ranks fourth in the league with 109 strikeouts and 117.1 innings pitched.

It was the second weekly award for Ely this season, who becomes the first Warthog to duplicate the feat this season. Brandon Allen and Aaron Poreda swept the Carolina League honors in mid-May and both have since been promoted to Double-A Birmingham.
