New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - Drew Butera knocked in Erik Lis to give the Rock Cats a 6-5 walk-off win over the visiting Binghamton Mets.
Ben Julianel retired the only three batters he faced in the top of the ninth to keep the game tied, 5-5. In the bottom of the ninth, David Winfree led off with a double to left field and Lis drew an intentional walk. Danny Valencia then singled to load the bases. Winfree was thrown out at home on a force out when Matt Moses grounded to second base. That sent Butera, who had entered the game to replace catcher Rodolfo Palacios after he was pinch-hit for in the eighth, to the plate. Butera's grounder to shortstop allowed Lis to score from third and give the Rock Cats a walk-off win.
Binghamton took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Salvador Paniagua. The B-Mets tacked on another run in the fourth when Anderson Machado delivered an RBI double to left field.
In the sixth, the B-Mets struck again. Shawn Bowman opened the inning with a double and scored on a triple by Josh Petersen for a 3-0 lead. Machado added an RBI single in the inning.
The Rock Cats finally broke through in the sixth inning. Brian Dinkelman started things off with a double to left field. Eric Brown retired the next two batters, but then he allowed a double to Brock Peterson that scored Dinkelman. Winfree and Valencia both added RBI singles to close the gap, 4-3 and knock Brown out of the game.
Binghamton scored again in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Caleb Stewart, but the âCats roared back in the bottom of the eighth. Lis led off the inning with a double and Valencia followed with a single. Pinch hitter Felix Molina then lined a single to center field that scored Lis. Dinkelman's double knocked in Valencia to tie the game.
Brown finished with three runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four. Tim Lavigne (2-3) suffered the loss by allowing the winning run in the ninth.
For the Rock Cats, starter Ryan Mullins allowed four runs on nine hits through six innings. Julianel (2-2) picked up the win.
