Kane County Cougars News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars mustered just four hits and missed several scoring opportunities Saturday night, losing, 1-0, against the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front of 4,831 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Starter Scott Deal pitched six shutout frames, but a homer in the seventh off reliever Leonardo Espinal decided the game.

Deal yielded five hits, walked two and struck out three en route to his first quality start of the season in eight tries. He worked just one perfect inning but his defense turned a key double play and catcher Jake Smith threw out three Kernels on stolen base attempts.

Espinal (3-1) gave up a two-out solo homer in the seventh to Julio Perez, and that became the difference. The Cougars' offense couldn't score against starter Esmerlin Jimenez (4-2) and relievers Tim Kiely and Eddie McKiernan. They had two runners get picked off, and the Kernels turned a pair of double plays and sent the final 11 Cougars hitters down in order.

The Cougars (7-10) and Kernels (11-6) play again Sunday afternoon at 2 CT when Brad Hertzler (1-2, 3.80) faces Trevor Reckling (6-2, 2.43).
