Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
A solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to be the only run of the game as the Cedar Rapids Kernels shut out the Kane County Cougars, 1-0, in front of 4,831 fans on Bank of the West Fireworks night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The game proved to be a pitcher's duel early as Kernels starter Esmerlin Jimenez and Kane County starter Scott Deal traded goose eggs through the first six innings. Deal was lifted to start the seventh for reliever Leonardo Espinal (3-1), who gave up the home run to Perez on a 2-0 pitch. Tim Keily pitched a scoreless eighth and Eddie McKiernan struck out one in the ninth for his ninth save.
Jimenez (4-2) scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings, walked two and struck out one for his fourth win. Deal gave up just five hits and struck out three over six innings in a no-decision effort.
Efren Navarro was 3 for 3 and Ryan Groth was 1-4 with a triple. Tyler Johnson added a single as the Kernels had six hits in the game.
Game two of this three game series is Sunday afternoon at 2 pm. The first 1,000 children, 12-under, through the gates when they open at 1 pm receive a free youth baseball bat from McDonald's.
