Dayton, Ohio-Alex Avila's single to center field with one out in the top of the ninth inning brought in Joe Tucker from second base to break a 2-2 tie as the West Michigan Whitecaps defeated the Dayton Dragons 3-2 on Saturday night. The attendance of 9,243 was the third largest of the season for the Dragons.

Avila's hit spoiled a comeback bid by the Dragons, who trailed 2-0 before scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. The loss dropped the Dragons to 7-10 in the second half.

West Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. A pair of walks and a wild pitch by Dragons starting pitcher Josh Ravin advanced Cory Middleton to third base, and he scored on a two-out single by Kyle Peter. In the fifth, Kody Kaiser connected on a solo home run against Ravin to make it 2-0.

The Dragons rallied in the seventh. Denis Phipps walked to start the inning and Devin Mesoraco followed with a double to left to move Phipps to third. One batter later, Jason Bour singled to left to bring in both Phipps and Mesoraco to tie the game.

The Dragons had a chance to take the lead later in the seventh inning. Angel Cabrera doubled to left with two outs, but Kevyn Feiner flied out to center to end the threat. Then in the eighth, an error and a walk to Logan Parker gave the Dragons a two-on, one-out opportunity. But Phipps popped to third and Mesoraco flied to right to end the inning.

In the top of the ninth with Dayton's Zach Stewart on the mound, Tucker doubled along the right field line with one out, and Avila followed with a hard ground ball up the middle to drive in the tie-breaking run. The Dragons were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth.

The Dragons finished with seven hits. Feiner went 2 for 3 as the only Dragon with multiple hits.

The Dragons host the Whitecaps again Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. Luis Montano (8-5, 4.27) will start for Dayton against the league's top pitcher, Alfredo Figaro (10-2, 1.73).
