West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

DAYTON, OH - For the eighteen time this year, the Whitecaps won by a single run as Alex Avila delivered the go-ahead hit in the top of the ninth inning of a 3-2 triumph in Dayton. Joe Tucker doubled with one out and scored the go-ahead run.

Mauricio Robles held the Dragons scoreless through five innings and extended his scoreless innings pitched streak to 13.1. However, Robles was taken out of the game with two runners in scoring position and no outs in the seventh following a lead-off walk to Denis Phipps and a double by Devin Mesoraco.

Wilton Garcia was brought into the game and retired the first hitter he faced, but yielded a two-run single to Jason Bour, which tied the score, 2-2.

West Michigan built a 2-0 advantage with an RBI single by Kyle Peter in the third and a solo home run by Kody Kaiser in the ninth.

Zach Stewart, who was chosen by the Reds in the third round of the 2008 draft, pitched the top of the ninth for Dayton and took the loss.

The Whitecaps are 4-1 in Dayton this season.

Four double plays were turned in the game by the Dragons, which was the most against the Whitecaps this year.

Left fielder Joe Tucker started a double play for the Whitecaps when he made a leaping catch at the wall to rob Mesoraco of extra bases in the fourth. Phipps was forced out before he could return to first base on the play.
