Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Trevor Bell pitched a complete game while Efren Navarro and Tyler Johnson provided the offensive support to lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 6-2 win Tuesday afternoon on Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Navarro was 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI and Johnson hit a pair of solo homers. Bell, who righted his ship after a tough start, struck out seven and walked two for the win.
The Rattlers (2-4 second half, 33-39 overall) wasted no time taking an early lead. Maximo Mendez drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Edilio Colina drove in Mendez with a double to left. Ron Garth followed with another double to left and Colina scored to put the Rattlers up 2-0. But, that would be all the Rattlers would get off Bell.
The Kernels (4-2, 35-39) rallied back to tie the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. A two-out RBI single by Navarro in the fourth got Cedar Rapids on the scoreboard. Johnson homered off Paredes in the fifth to tie the game 2-2.
Cedar Rapids grabbed the lead in bottom of the sixth. Rattler starting pitcher Edward Paredes walked the leadoff batter. He left in favor of reliever Natividad Dilone and the Kernels loaded the bases with two singles off Dilone.
The go ahead run scored on a sharp grounder back to the mound off the bat of Andrew Romine. The grounder knocked the glove off Dilone and by the time he tracked down the ball, the only play was to first. An RBI grounder by Anel De Los Santos plated the second run of the inning.
Cedar Rapids wasn't done adding on runs. Navarro singled to right-center in the seventh to drive in the fifth Kernel run of the game. Johnson hit his second homer of the day to center in the eighth for a 6-2 advantage.
Bell, who started the 2008 season with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in the California League, set down the Rattlers in order in the top of the ninth to finish the game.
Game three of the series is Wednesday night. Nathan Adcock (2-5, 3.60) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Michael Davitt (2-5, 5.44) is set to go for the Kernels. Game time is 7:00pm.
