Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries have sold the rights to right-handed relief pitcher Javier Garcia to the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox will assign Garcia to extended spring training in Fort Myers, FL. In extended spring training, Garcia will receive further evaluation before being assigned to one of the Red Sox affiliate.

"Javier has done a great job in the short time he has been with us," said Canaries Manager Steve Shirley. "We all hope he has great success with the Red Sox."

Garcia was recommended to Shirley by Canaries starting pitcher Ben Moore. Moore played with Garcia this past winter in Columbia. In Columbia, Garcia went 3-0 with five saves and a 2.89 ERA, pitching 18.2 innings and striking out 19 batters. Garcia, Moore, and former Sioux Falls Canaries outfielder Edgard Clemente contributed as Los Camines swept Los Indios for the league championship.

In four appearances for the Canaries, Garcia went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA. In 6.2 innings pitched, Garcia allowed just three base runners (two hits, one walk) and struck out 11 of the 22 opposing batters that he faced.

Garcia, a native of San Casimiro, Venezuela, is the first American Association player to be picked up by a Major League organization since the start of the 2008 season.
