Saints Run Their Way to 8-3 Victory Over Canaries

SIOUX FALLS, SD - The St. Paul Saints have speed and they used it Saturday night stealing five bases on their way to an 8-3 victory over the Sioux Falls Canaries at Sioux Falls Stadium.

The Saints got the running game going in the first when Scooter Jordan singled to center, stole second and advanced to third on catcher Andrew Barbaro's throwing error. Tim Brown cashed in with a single to right, scoring Jordan and giving the Saints a 1-0 lead. Brown advanced to second on a wild pitch and two batters later Jason Colson singled home Brown. Colson finished the night 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Saints starter Brian Whinnery defined the phrase "scattering hits" as he gave up 11 in 5.0 innings of work, but gave up just two runs. The only runs came by way of the long ball, a solo shot from Beau Torbert in the second inning, his first of the season and Ben Van Iderstine's first homer of the season in the fourth, a solo homer to left tying the game at two.

The biggest moment of the night for the Saints on the defensive side came in the sixth when reliever Mike Bille had the bases loaded with one out in a tie game. He got Tim Hutting to ground into an inning ending double play. Bille tossed two shutout innings to earn his second victory of the season.

The Saints used the stolen base in the seventh when Julius Thames walked, stole second and advanced to third on Barbaro's throwing error. He scored on Scooter Jordan's sacrifice fly.

The Saints put it away in the eighth inning when they sent nine men to the plate. Brown led off the inning with a walk and two batters later advanced to third on a single by Colson, who advanced to second when left fielder Torbert bobbled the ball. After an intentional walk to Kevin Sullivan loaded the bases, Brent Krause singled up the middle to drive in two and give the Saints a 5-2 lead. Ben Thomas then hit a grounder to short that forced Krause, but second baseman Josh Patton's throw to first went in the dirt and got by the first baseman allowing Thomas to score. Thames finished the scoring with an RBI double to left-center.

The Saints and Canaries meet for the third and final game Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Luis Villarreal (1-0, 2.45) to the mound against Canaries RHP Pat Mahomes (2-0, 3.00). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
