Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - One day after the Sioux Falls Canaries (5-4) handed the St. Paul Saints (8-1) their first loss of the season, the Saints struck back and defeated the Canaries, 7-3.
The Saints scored two runs right out of the gate in the top of the first inning. Scooter Jordan led off with a single. Jordan then stole second base and got around to third when catcher Andrew Barbaro's throw sailed into centerfield. Tim Brown singled to score Jordan, and the Saints had an early one-run lead. After a wild pitch moved Brown into scoring position. Jason Colson singled to score Brown, and after a half inning, the Canaries trailed 2-0.
The Birds came back to tie the game with a pair of home runs. Beau Torbert hit his first homer of the year in the second inning, and Ben Van Iderstine went long for the first time this season in the fourth. The pair of solo homers for the Canaries tied the game, 2-2.
St. Paul went ahead on an unearned run in the seventh inning. Julius Thames singled. Thames stole second base, and Barbaro's second errant throw of the night allowed the runner to third. Jordan hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Thames, and the Saints went ahead, 3-2.
In the eighth inning the Saints pulled away. Tim Brown drew a lead-off walk. Jason Colson followed with a single to left field that was misplayed by Beau Torbert. The error allowed the runners to second and third. After Kevin Sullivan was intentionally walked, Brent Krause delivered a two-out single to score Brown and Colson, putting the Saints up by three, 5-2. After Ben Thomas replaced Krause on first base following a fielder's choice that advanced Sullivan to third, Thomas stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Thames brought them both home with a single for a 7-2 lead.
The Canaries added one final run in the ninth inning on a solo homer by Will Smith. Smith's first blast of the year was not enough, as the Canaries went down, 7-3.
Mike Bille (2-0) picked up the win for St. Paul. Kelly Casares (0-1) gave up five runs, four earned, on three hits and three walks, in taking his first loss of the year.
The Canaries and Saints will meet for the series rubber-match on Sunday afternoon. The 2:05 p.m. game will feature Pat Mahomes (2-0) on the mound for the Canaries against Luis Villarreal (1-0) for the Saints. The game will also be the Canaries "D.A.R.E.
