Sioux City Explorers News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA -- The Sioux City Explorers got a dramatic 2 out bases clearing double from Luke Hetherington in the 8th to come from behind and beat Ft. Worth 4-3 on Saturday night at Lewis & Clark Park.
Trailing 3-1, the X's had 2 outs in the 8th when Cats manager Chad Tredaway decided to bring in a lefty Kelly Shearer to face Sioux City slugger Juan Camacho. The 1B drilled a base hit to start a rally. Chad Gabriel followed with another base hit and Alex Llanos walked to load the bases. Out came Shearer, in came Wayne Hedden as Tredaway decided to not bring in his closer Jon Hunton. Hedden got ahead of Hetherington 0-2 but the RF drilled the next pitch into the LF corner to clear the bases and ended up at third after SS Aaron Sisk dropped the relay.
Brett Reid gave up a leadoff walk to Willie James but struck Brian Fryer, Charles Carter and Nilson Teilon in succession to preserve the victory.
The X's took the lead early in the game on a RBI single by Sam Walker in the 2nd but Ft. Worth tied it in the 4th on a controversial play. With Jake Gautreau on 2nd, Sisk hit a high fly ball to right that Hetherington caught, took a step, then fumbled the ball to the ground. Umpire Tony Mueller ruled that Hetherington did not make the catch and X's Manager Les Lancaster argued to no avail, getting ejected for the 2nd time on the homestand. The play was ruled an error on Hetherington scoring Gautreau.
In the 6th, the Cats took the lead as Gautreau got a 2 out double off X's starter Tim Layden. Sioux City went to the bullpen and brought in Ty Marotz, who walked Sisk and John Allen loading the bases. Ken Lup then dumped a single into right scoring 2 and giving Ft. Worth a 3-1 lead.
The X's only scored the 1 run against Cats starter Joel Kirsten and submariner Tim Haines shut down the X's for a 1 inning and 2/3 until the comeback in the 8th.
Hetherington went 1-4 with 3 RBI for the Explorers. Juan Camacho went 3 for 4 woth 2 runs. Chad Gabriel went 2 for 4with a run. Nick McCoola went 2 for 4 with a double. Layden went 5 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned on 4 hits, walking 1 and striking out 2. Paige Dumont pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win; Reid earned his 2nd save.
Sioux City goes for the sweep on Sunday against the Cats and will send the veteran lefty Dusty Bergman to the hill. Ft. Worth counters with their own veteran lefty Pedro Flores. Game time is 5:05 at Lewis & Clark Park.
