Bisons Notes

April 15, 2008 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

TODAY'S GAME: This afternoon, the Buffalo Bisons take on the Syracuse Chiefs for the first game of a four-game series from Dunn Tire Park (1:05 p.m.). The Herd is coming off a four-game split with the Toledo Mud Hens that opened this eight-game homestand. This will be Buffalo's first divisional game of the 2008 season. On the mound today is RHP Sean Smith, who is coming off a very tough no-decision. Last Thursday in Richmond, Smith allowed just one hit over six innings. The Chiefs will counter with former Bisons pitcher, RHP Kane Davis.

MEET MR. SMTIH: RHP Sean Smith was nearly perfect in his last start. On Thursday in Richmond, he retired the first 12 batters he faced and allowed just one walk and one hit in six innings. Plus, he erased both base runners in the fifth inning on a perfectly executed "fake-to-third, throw-to-first" doubleplay. Smith, however, earned a no-decision in the 2-1 loss.

HIT STREAK: Infielder Danny Sandoval extended his hit streak to a team-high seven games yesterday. After going 0-4 in the season opener, Sandoval has collected at least one hit in his last seven games, averaging .296 (8-27) with two doubles and two RBI. In 2005, Sandoval was the International League's batting champion with a .331 average with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

BULLY FOR THE PEN: The Bisons bullpen has been lights out on this homestand. In the four games against Toledo, the staff threw 11.1 innings without allowing an earned run (one unearned run). All seven relievers got in a game during the series with the Hens and combined for 15 strikeouts and only nine hits allowed.

ROSTER MOVE: The Bisons had their first roster move of the season yesterday. Infielder Andy Gonzalez was placed on the temporary inactive list so he could go home to Puerto Rico for the birth of a child. Catcher David Wallace was activated in his place. Wallace hit .115 (11-96) with three homeruns and four RBI in 33 games with the Bisons last year.

THRUWAY SERIES: Today's game is the Bisons first Thruway Series game of the 2008 season. Buffalo has won the annual competition with the Rochester Red Wings and the Syracuse Chiefs in six of the past eight seasons. The Chiefs are coming off a four-game series split with the Red Wings at Frontier Field in the first Thruway Series games of this season.
