Tribe Introduces First-Ever Field Classic
April 15, 2008 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Four of Indiana's top high school baseball programs will play in the inaugural Victory Field Classic on April 26. The doubleheader will feature No. 11 Kokomo vs. Jasper at 5 p.m. and No. 2 Brownsburg vs. No. 4 Cathedral at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Admission will be $5 for both games. Victory Field is located at 501 West Maryland Street on the southwest corner of downtown Indianapolis.
"We are very excited to host these four schools in the first-ever Victory Field Classic," Indians Vice President & General Manager Cal Burleson says. "Each school has a tremendous baseball tradition, and we expect a lot of enthusiastic fans. The Indians organization takes pride in providing this opportunity for these four outstanding teams to play at the 'Best Minor League Ballpark in America.'"
The four schools were a combined 19-4 through Monday's contests. Pat O'Neil's Brownsburg Bulldogs were 6-0, Rich Andriole's Cathedral Fighting Irish were 7-1, Steve Edwards' Kokomo Wildkats were 3-1 and Terry Gobert's Jasper Wilcats were 3-2.
The four programs have also combined for nine Indiana High School Athletic Association state championships. Jasper leads the way with five titles -- two single-class (1996 and 1997) and three 3A (1998, 2000 and 2006).
Cathedral owns one 3A championship (2001) and one 4A title (2007). Kokomo captured the single-class state championship in 1985, while Brownsburg won the 4A tourney in 2005.
Victory Field will host to the 42nd annual IHSAA Baseball State Finals June 13-14. Lafayette Central Catholic (A), South Spencer (2A), Norwell (3A) and Cathedral (4A) took home trophies last June.
Victory Field will also host the City & County Championship tilts on May 8. Times are still to be determined.
