
Columbus drops Bulls in series opener

Durham, NC - The Durham Bulls went to the bottom of the ninth inning down by only a run, but Chris Booker came on for the Columbus Clippers and struck out the side to earn his first save and defeat the Bulls, 5-4, Tuesday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Columbus struck first, plating three in the third off Durham starter J.K. Ryu (0-2, 6.23) on a walk, two bunt singles to third, a Bret Boone two-run double and a groundout. The Bulls got one in the fourth on Joel Guzman's third home run of the year. The Clippers then tacked on two in the seventh off Nick DeBarr on a walk, a bunt single to third, Guzman's fifth error of the year and a sacrifice fly.
Then the Bulls scored three in the eighth on a walk, two singles, a sacrifice fly and a two-run double from John Rodriguez. Calvin Medlock held the score with two innings of scoreless relief, but the Bulls could not culminate the comeback in the ninth.
Garrett Mock (1-0, 5.14) earned the win for Columbus. The Bulls and Clippers meet again tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Chris Mason (0-1, 4.66) takes the mound for Durham, matching up against fellow righty Collin Balester (1-1, 2.61).
