Sea Dogs Add Asencio to Roster

Portland, Maine- The Boston Red Sox have assigned right-handed pitcher Miguel Asencio to the Portland Sea Dogs from Extended Spring Training. The Sea Dogs had an open roster spot with the promotion of Chris Smith to Triple-A Pawtucket on April 8th. Portland's roster now stands at the 24-man limit.

The 27 year-old Asencio, was signed by the Boston Red Sox as a minor league free agent on January 21, 2008. He spent last season with the Houston Astros' organization where he split time between Triple-A Round Rock and Double-A Corpus Christi, posting a combined record of 2-6 with a 6.21 ERA.

Asencio has appeared in 42 Major League games with the Kansas City Royals and Colorado Rockies where he has a 7-8 career record with a 5.12 ERA. He is the lone player on the Sea Dogs roster with Major League experience. He was originally signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as a non-drafted free agent in 1998. He has appeared in 144 minor league games with a 28-30 record with a 4.51 ERA.

The Sea Dogs continue their road trip tonight with a 6:35 PM start in Norwich, Connecticut against the Defenders (Giants). Portland is off to a 4-1 start and are tied with the Defenders for the top spot in the Eastern League's Northern Division. The Sea Dogs return to Hadlock Field for the home opener on Friday, April 11th at 6:00 PM.
