Loons Slide Continues On Turn Back The Clock Day

The Kane County Cougars scored early and often to beat the Great Lakes Loons in front of 5,346 fans by a score of 11-2.

The Loons celebrated turn back the clock day by emerging from a giant makeshift cornfield in the right field corner, as well as wearing the uniforms of the 1948 Saginaw Bears.

The Loons jumped out to an early lead in the ballgame thanks to a RBI-double by Josh Bell and a Rick Taloa sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. The Cougars would answer in a big way with five runs in the second thanks to five straight hitters reaching base off Loons starter Chris Malone to give Kane County a 5-2 lead. The Cougars would never look back scoring single runs in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings, including three runs in the ninth.

To rest his arm, the Loons scratched right-hander Josh Wall from his scheduled start. Due to the circumstances, Great Lakes turned to emergency starter Chris Malone who only went three innings allowing six runs while walking four in picking up his first loss as a Loon. Thomas Melgarejo went three innings holding the Cougars to a single run. Miguel Sanfler and Miguel Ramirez pitched a combined three innings in mop-up duty to complete the ballgame.

The Loons had a lack of relief help heading into Sunday afternoons ballgame. With Wall unavailable, the Loons only had the four pitchers they used able to pitch.

The Loons walked 10 batters for the third consecutive ballgame have walked 51 batters in the eight-game homestand with Clinton and Kane County.

James Heuser (9-6) started for Kane County and allowed two runs in 7.2 innings in picking up his ninth win of the season. Sammy Demel pitched the final 1.1 innings to finish off the ballgame.

The Loons have still not recorded a win in the month of August, dropping their first five games in the years eighth month.
