Connecticut Defenders News Release
Sea Dogs pitcher Michael Bowden put forth a solid outing and the bats provided all the run support he'd need. The Defenders nearly tallied double digit hits, but failed to string together timely knocks and lacked production on the mound in the 10-3 loss.
The Defenders struck first after a lead off single by 2B Eugenio Velez. He'd proceed to steal both second and third base, but injure his shoulder on his slide into the third base bag. He'd leave the game and Trey Webb entered in his place. With two outs and Webb still at third, OF John Bowker delivered a single to score Webb and give the Defenders a short-lived 1-0 lead. In the top of the second RHP Darren Sack surrendered a 2-run home run to C Salvador Paniagua, a hanging breaking ball that eventually sailed over the right field wall to give the Sea Dogs a 2-1 lead. The Sea Dogs would never look back.
In the third inning Portland put 5 runs on the board to end Sack's evening. 2B Iggy Suarez hit a 2-run single, 3B Zach Borowiak picked up an RBI single, and OF Jeff Corsaletti delivered a 2-run double to cap the scoring. The Sea Dogs led 7-1 after three full.
The Defenders scored in the bottom of the fifth off an RBI groundout by Bowker to score SS Jake Wald, who singled to lead off the inning. They'd also pick up a run in sixth inning off an RBI single by Trey Webb, scoring 3B Mark Minicozzi who led off the inning with a walk.
The Connecticut effort at the plate wasn't enough as the Sea Dogs added 2 runs in the sixth inning and one more in the eight inning to extend their lead to a commanding 10-3 mark. Sea Dog reliever Kyle Jackson retired all 9 batters he faced after entering the sixth with 1 out. Andrew Dobies came in on the ninth and retired 3 of 4 batters, including a strikeout of OF Bowker swinging, to end the game and seal the seven run victory.
Darren Sack suffered through his second straight start after lasting just 3 innings, surrendering 7 runs, 7 hits, 3 walks, and striking out 2. Michael Bowden (W, 2-0) picked up the victory after tossing 5.1 innings, giving up 3 runs, 7 hits, 4 walks, and striking out two batters. Kyle Jackson was fantastic after tossing 2.2 hitless innings, while striking out a batter in the process. The Defenders were out hit 13-8. Trey Webb went 2-4 with a double and RBI single after replacing Velez in the first inning. John Bowker went 1-5 in the game with 2 RBI. The Defenders dropped their third in a row and dropped to 16-31 on the season. Game 2 of the series will take place on Wednesday May 30 at 6:35 p.m. and feature LHP Tommy Hottovy (1-5, 4.66) against LHP Alex Hinshaw (1-1, 1.71).
