Fisher Cats To Honor Students Statewide With Scholarships

Manchester, NH- The New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, are proud to announce this year's recipients of the Fisher Cats Scholar Athlete Scholarships. These recipients will be honored tonight in the Fisher Cats Scholar Athlete Award Ceremony prior to the 6:35pm game against the Trenton Thunder at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.
These scholarships are made possible by the Fisher Cats Foundation, a statewide charitable organization dedicated to bettering the lives of New Hampshire's youth by supporting Children's Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD) and providing scholarships to college bound New Hampshire students. The Foundation's board is composed of Jim Desmarais, Lewis Feldstein, Nancy Formella, Sylvia McBeth, Tom Monahan, Tom Rath, Stella Scamman, Stephen Singer and Karl Stone, a group of leading New Hampshire citizens who make a positive difference in the lives of Granite State residents each and every day.
The Fisher Cats will be awarding $2,500 for each student for a total of $25,000 at a 5:45pm special pre-game ceremony. The money for these scholarships was raised through 50-50 contests at Fisher Cats' games and the 2nd Annual Granite State Baseball Dinner in January.
The selection of this award is based on strict criteria that include academic achievement, athletic achievement and active citizenship. The applicants must also be graduating high school seniors and citizens of New Hampshire.
According to Art Solomon, the owner of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats and the Chairman of the Fisher Cats Foundation Board, "There were so many outstanding high school seniors throughout the state who applied. It was extremely difficult to select the 10 most outstanding as award recipients."
"With over 250 applicants, we are pleased to announce that the winners of this year's prestigious award are Abdulbaset Zarveen, Christopher Buker, Danielle Cate, John Kenny, Josh Heuslein, Lauren Gifford, Michael Jungwirth, Mika Glines and Thomas Stark," Solomon said.
*Abdulbaset Zarveen (Epping/Epping Middle High School) is planning to major in engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
*Christopher Buker (Hillsboro/Hillsboro-Deering High School) is going to New England College to major in criminal justice.
*Danielle Cate (Boscawen/Merrimack Valley High School) is interested in athletic training and physical therapy and will be going to the University of New England.
*John Kenny (Colebrook/Colebrook Academy) is enrolling at the University of New Hampshire for an undetermined major.
*Josh Heuslein (Manchester/Manchester Central) will be attending Carnegie Mellon University for engineering.
*Lauren Gifford (Goffstown/Goffstown High School) is interested in biology, pre-medicine and physical therapy, college undecided.
*Michael Jungwirth (Keene/Keene High School) will attend the University of Tennessee, looking to major in biochemistry.
*Mika Glines (Laconia/Laconia High School) plans to go to Elon University and major in forensic biology.
*Thomas Stark (Fitzwilliam/Monadnock Regional High School) will be attending Middlebury College and has not chosen a major.
Page Mendenhall (Nashua/Notre Dame High School of Lawrence, MA) will also be honored before the game as the recipient of the Swymer Family Scholarship for $2,500 - an award offered to students who have been patients at Children's Hospital at Dartmouth. Mendenhall has Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis -a chronic illness has made school an everyday challenge, which she has overcome. She is anxious for the opportunity to attend Johnson and Wales University in the fall to try to perfect her baking talents as a culinary arts major.
Tonight will be highlighted by the Scholar Athlete Award ceremony and will also include Teacher Appreciation Night, sponsored by Energy North Propane. The series with Trenton also features USA Subs Baseball Bingo and U.S Cellular Most Improved Student Night on Wednesday (6:35pm) and Windward Petroleum Atlas Fireworks and First Responders Night coming on Thursday (6:35pm).
