
Eastern League Announces Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week ending May 27th:
Bowie Baysox infielder Oscar Salazar has been named the Eastern League's Player of the Week for the week ending May 27th. The 28-year old batted .464 (13-for-28) with three doubles, three home runs, eight RBI, five runs scored and a .893 slugging percentage in seven games for the Baysox last week. Salazar, a native of Edo Aragua, Venezuela, had a hit in every game he played in for the Baysox last week, including five multi-hit games, and he currently has a 12-game hitting streak. The 6'0", 170 lb. slugger currently leads the league in hits (62) and is also among the league leaders in RBI (34-2nd), doubles (13-tied 2nd), slugging percentage (.529-tied 2nd), extra-base hits (21-3rd), batting average (.332-3rd) and home runs (8-5th). Oscar, who previously played in the Eastern League with Erie and Binghamton in 2002 and Akron in 2004, was signed as a free agent by the Baltimore Orioles on March 10, 2007.

Kyle Yates, a right-handed starting pitcher for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, is the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 27th. The 5'10", 190 lb. hurler made two starts for the Fisher Cats last week and went 2-0 with nine strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. In his first start of the week the 24-year old struck out six batters and allowed only three hits in eight shutout innings of work to earn a win against the Reading Phillies at Merchantsauto.com Stadium last Monday. Yates made his second appearance of the week on Sunday against the Binghamton Mets at NYSEG Stadium and threw six shutout innings with five hits, one walk and three strikeouts to lead the Fisher Cats to a 4-0 victory. Kyle was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 13th round of the 2004 draft after going 1-1 with 45 strikeouts and a 3.05 ERA in 41.1 innings of work in 28 relief appearances for the University of Texas in 2004.
