Reading Fightin Phils News Release
Reading, PA --Jason Hill's broken-bat RBI single up the middle in the ninth inning completed a late-inning comeback, and the Phillies snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory Tuesday over the Bowie Baysox.
Mike Costanzo opened the inning with his third hit, a single through the right side off right-hander Felix Romero. Chris Coste, who batted .328 in 95 games with the big club last year, blooped a single to left for his third hit of the night, Costanzo stopping at second. Romero then struck out Matt Padgett, who failed in his only attempt to move the runners up with a bunt. Bowie then opted to bring in their closer, Jim Hoey, a right-hander who leads the league with 13 saves.
Hill broke his bat on a fastball, but got enough contact to send the ball over the bag and into center, Costanzo scoring without a play.
The Baysox (26-25) had scored three in the third, the key blow a two-out, two-run double by hot-hitting Oscar Salazar, the Eastern League's Player of the Week. Jeff Fiorentino's fourth home run, a solo shot in the sixth, put the visitors up 4-0 against Landon Jacobsen, who worked seven innings.
The Phillies (24-26) began their rally in the sixth when they scored a run on a double-play groundout. They got two more in the seventh on Jesus Merchan's RBI double and Coste's RBI groundout. It became 4-4 in the eighth on Peeter Ramos' two-out RBI single.
The victory went to Jason Anderson, who pitched two scoreless innings in his Reading debut. Romero (2-3) took the loss.
