April 24, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, CA- Despite pitching six scoreless innings, the Fresno Grizzlies bullpen received limited run support in a 3-1 loss to the Tucson Sidewinders in the second game of a double-header at Chukchansi Park. With a win and a loss on the night, Fresno's record moves to 9-10 on the season.
Grizzlies starter Brian Bowles got off to a rough start after Tucson took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Two of the three runs off Bowles came when lead off hitter Rich Thompson reached on a fielding error, which was followed by a towering two-run home run to the right field seats by center fielder Jeff Salazar. Bowles' outing ended after giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits, two walks and two strikeouts in two and two-thirds innings.
Meanwhile, Tucson starter D.J. Carrasco held Grizzlies hitters to a run on four hits, no walks and five strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings pitched. The Grizzlies' only run came in the bottom of the third inning on a Clay Timpner RBI double that scored catcher Justin Knoedler.
In the ninth, Grizzlies pinch hitter Nate Schierholtz walked to start a two out rally. But Fresno's hopes ended when Schierholtz was thrown out at second trying to advance on a ball that got away from Tucson catcher Matt Morgan. Sidewinder reliever Chad Harville earned the save, pitching an inning and a third.
Relievers Patrick Misch and Dan Giese combined to surrender just two hits and no walks while striking out four batters in front of 4,793 fans.
The Grizzlies return to Chukchansi Park tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. to take on the Sidewinders in the final contest of their four game series. The Grizzlies will send right-hander Matt Kinney (1-2, 4.26 ERA) to the mound to face a starter to be announced against Tucson.
Tomorrow night's game also features Tecate Taco Tuesdays. All fans will be offered $2 tacos all night and $2 16oz. Tecate beers from the time gates open through 7:35 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling (559) 320-TIXS, by logging onto www.fresnogrizzlies.com, or by visiting the Chukchansi Park ticket office.
