Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Jorge Padilla had four hits while Ambiorix Concepcion and Wilson Batista each had three for the Binghamton Mets, who beat the Connecticut Defenders 11-5 in the series opener at Dodd Stadium Friday. The win, combined with Portland's loss to New Hampshire, puts Binghamton two games behind Portland for the EL North's final playoff spot with three to play.

Binghamton (69-68) took advantage of the wildness of spot starter Froilian Ramirez to get on the board in the second. Ramirez (0-1) loaded the bases with no out on walks to Carlos Gomez and Concepcion before hitting Mike Nickeas. He was pulled after issuing a bases-loaded walk to Corey Ragsdale, scoring Gomez with the game's first run. Reliever R.D. Spiehs, after striking out opposing pitcher Miguel Pinango, gave up four straight RBI hits, starting with Batista's double, which scored Concepcion and Nickeas, before singles by Chase Lambin, Jay Caligiuri and Padilla brought in Ragsdale, Batista and Lambin, respectively, for a 6-0 B-Mets lead.

Connecticut (62-76) was able to get to Pinango (10-7) for a pair in the bottom of the second, when Brian Horwitz scored on an error and Spiehs drove in another with a single. After Ragsdale's sac fly brought in Concepcion in the third for a 7-2 B-Mets lead, Connecticut scored three times in the fourth on RBI hits by Speihs, Quincy Foster and Derin McMains, cutting Binghamton's lead to 7-5.

However, the B-Mets scored the game's last four runs. Ragsdale led off the sixth with a walk before Andy Wilson drove him home with a pinch-hit double before scoring himself on Lambin's sacrifice fly. Binghamton got two more in the ninth when Padilla reached with a single and scored on Concepcion's triple. A throwing error brought Concepcion home for the B-Mets' final margin of victory.

Saturday, the B-Mets play the second game of their season-ending four-game series at Connecticut. Bryan Edwards (4-8, 4.82) gets the start for Binghamton against Garrett Broshuis (6-10, 5.00) of Connecticut. Game time is 7:05 from Dodd Stadium with the radio broadcast starting at 6:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
