Connecticut Defenders News Release
The Defenders fell into an early 6-0 hole that they almost but never could quite climb out of as they lost 11-5 to the Binghamton Mets.
Froilan Ramirez made his first professional start and his first professional AA appearance, and it lasted through only an inning plus as he failed to get an out in the second inning. Command was his biggest issue as he walked three and hit two of the eight batters he faced. R.D. Spiehs came in with one run in and the bases loaded with nobody out in the 2nd. Spiehs struggled to get outs, as the Mets put up six runs in the frame, but Spiehs was a big part of the comeback.
Spiehs had an RBI double and an RBI single as the Defenders cut the deficit to 7-5 in the 4th inning but that was the last they would score. The Mets tacked on insurance and eventually won by an 11-5 score. Dave Machemer was ejected from the game in the top of the 2nd for arguing a call at third base.
The Defenders will try and snap their skid in a game with playoff implications for the Mets on Saturday with right-hander Garrett Broshuis (6-10) on the mound. His counterpart will be right-hander Bryan Edwards (4-8) for the Mets. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
