
Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2006 To Be Inducted Friday Night

CHARLESTON, SC -- In its first year of including amateur players, the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame will induct four new members - each with a different approach to the game -- Friday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The inductees will be recognized on the field prior to the 7:05 pm contest between the RiverDogs and the Kannapolis Intimidators.
The Hall of Fame's 2006 Class consists of Ty Cline, Mike Cook, Gary McJunkin and Coach Chal Port.
An advisory committee consisting of knowledgeable and local baseball volunteers was created to come up with 12 names as potential nominees. Voting was conducted by the readership of The Post and Courier through an official ballot and more than 1,000 ballots were received.
The Class of 2006 includes:
Ty Cline: A local product that played college baseball at Clemson, Cline played professionally with the Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Braves, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants and Montreal Expos. He was a member of the Reds when they played the Baltimore Orioles in the 1970 World Series and batted .333;
Mike Cook: Another local product that pitched at St. Andrews High and the University of South Carolina (1983-85). A 1985 Baseball America All-America selection, Cook was the first-round draft choice of California Angels in '85 (19th overall pick);
Gary McJunkin: A former director of the Cooper River Parks & Recreation Commission, McJunkin served as Commissioner of Dixie Youth Baseball, State Director for Dixie Youth Baseball, a national commission member and served in DYB capacities for more than 50 years;
Chal Port: Coached Citadel baseball for 27 years and led the Bulldogs to seven Southern Conference titles and to the NCAA Regionals five times. A native of Pennsylvania, Port was honored as the 1990 National Coach of the Year by the Sporting News. He was a five-time SoCon Coach of the Year and his 1990 team, the one that reached the NCAA College World Series, recorded 26 consecutive wins and a No. 6 final ranking.
The Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame is jointly coordinated and operated by The Post and Courier and the RiverDogs. The Hall of Fame is located inside Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
In the Hall of Fame's inaugural year in 2003, James Island's Gorman Thomas and Holly Hill's Willie Randolph were enshrined as the first members. David Cone was inducted in 2004 and John Candelaria received the nod in 2005.
