Lake County Captains News Release
(Augusta, GA)-Matt Fornasiere had three RBI singles and four Captains pitchers combined on a three-hitter Tuesday night as the Captains blanked the Augusta GreenJackets, 8-0, at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
It was the second straight shutout for the Captains (25-18). With a 1-0 win in the second game of the doubleheader on Monday followed by Tuesday's 8-0 whitewash, the Captains have now tossed 16 consecutive scoreless innings.
The win drew the Captains a game closer to first place in the SAL North. The Lakewood BlueClaws lost 3-1 at Asheville, leaving the Captains just three games out of first with 25 left to play.
The Captains jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning against Dave McKae (5-2). A walk to Max Ramirez and three consecutive singles from Fernando Pacheco, P.J. Hiser and Fornasiere set up the rally. Hiser and Fornasiere drove in runs. Niuman Romero also drove in a run with a groundout.
Another lead-off walk in the third led to two more runs. Mike Butia drove in Chris Gimenez with a double to left, and Fornasiere drove in Butia with a two-out RBI single to make it 5-0.
Fornasiere finished 3-4 on the night. He added his third RBI single in the seventh, after a double by Hiser. Hiser was 2-5 with two runs scored.
J.D. Martin made his fourth rehab start for the Captains and tossed three perfect innings, striking out five. Lefty Doodle Hicks (1-0) relieved Martin in the fourth and threw three shutout innings, allowing just one hit. Mark Jecmen chipped in two scoreless innings and Julio Pinto closed out the ninth. It was the seventh shutout of the season for the Captains.
The Captains will wrap up the series and the road trip on Wednesday at 7:05 P.M. The Captain will send Jim Deters to the mound in search of his 10th win. The GreenJackets (34-11) will counter with righthander Joe Martinez. The Captains will open a homestand at Classic Park Friday night at 7:05. Fireworks will follow the game.
