August 8, 2006 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hickory Crawdads News Release
The Hickory Crawdads led 11-0 early, tallied a season high 20 hits, and won by double digits for only the second time in 2006 with a 14-4 blitz of the Savannah Sand Gnats Tuesday night at LP Frans Stadium. The win allowed Hickory to reach .500 (57-57) for the first time all season and put them within five games of first place in the Northern Division with a second half mark of 24-21.
A crowd of 2,775 watched Crawdad SS Cameron Blair homer and drive in five helping starter Todd Redmond to his team leading ninth win of the season. Blair's eighth inning three run smash was the last exclamation mark in perhaps the finest game of the year for Hickory, a powerful offense showing, and an errorless game in the field.
The 'Dads got on the board thanks to shoddy defense in the opening inning. Savannah starter Carlos Martinez watched as Hickory 2B Shelby Ford and CF Andrew McCutchen reached on one out errors. The 'Dads took a 2-0 lead on RBI singles from DH Mike McCuision and 1B Tony Mansolino.
After sending eight batters to the plate in the first frame, the Crawdads sent nine up in both the third and fourth innings. The first six batters of the third inning all reached with the first five scoring. Blair's two RBI single capped the frame and sent Martinez to the showers.
In the fourth, four straight Crawdads reached and scored. The inning was highlighted by back-to-back homers from Mansolino and catcher Steve Lerud.
Blair finished the game four for six with a run scored and five driven in. Mansolino was three for four with two runs scored and three knocked home. Crawdad RF Wanell Macia had three hits and scored three times.
Redmond (9-6) went six innings allowing three runs on six hits in the win. Martinez (4-6) allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits in two frames in the loss.
Hickory looks for the four game sweep on Wednesday night at 7pm. Hickory right hander Luis Valdez meets Savannah righty Bryan Lambert Jr.
