August 8, 2006 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - With only 12 home games remaining in the 2006 season, the Charleston RiverDogs begin a four-game homestand Thursday, August 10. The RiverDogs host the Kannapolis Intimidators at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Thursday through Sunday.
Charleston and Kannapolis meet for their third series of 2006, and for the second time at The Joe on Thursday. The RiverDogs, in their second season as a New York Yankees affiliate, will take on the Chicago White Sox's South Atlantic League affiliate. In eight meetings this season, the RiverDogs hold a commanding seven-games-to-one edge, with the only Intimidators victory coming in the teams' first meeting on April 20 in Charleston.
The homestand beings on August 10 with the final Wild Wing Café Thirsty Thursday of the season, featuring $1 drink specials. The RiverDogs will also be hosting area lawyers on Thursday for their annual Continuing Legal Education (CLE) evening in which the attorneys earn credit hours for attending a presentation by South Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal. Chief Justice Toal returns for the event and will toss a ceremonial first pitch prior to 7:05 p.m. start of the contest. The game is also presented by 95 SX.
Friday, August 11, is another "GEICO Friday Night Fireworks." The game features a post-game fireworks extravaganza as well as the popular post-game fortune cookie giveaway, as the RiverDogs continue their season-long celebration of the Chinese Year of the Dog. In addition to the post-game fireworks show, the RiverDogs and The Post and Courier will induct the 2006 Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame Class in pregame ceremonies. For the first time the Hall of Fame, which enshrined its first class in 2003, features amateur players, teams and coaches on the ballot and a record number of votes were recorded. Ty Cline, Mike Cook, Gary McJunkin and Coach Chal Port comprise the Hall of Fame's Class of 2006. The first 1,000 fans receive Thunderstix, compliments of The Post and Courier. The game is also being presented by Q 104.5.
All season-long, Saturday nights at The Joe are giveaway nights and this Saturday, August 12, the first 1,000 fans receive a free retro, tin lunch box courtesy of Comcast. The RiverDogs will be in the back-to-school mood and will collect schools supplies to help with the Charleston County School District's First Day Festival. Fans who bring school supplies, valued at $5 or more per person, receive a free general admission ticket. Prior to the game the Coastal Carolina Corvette club will showcase a number of unique Corvettes outside the park. The RiverDogs will also team with the Charleston Breast Center to help raise awareness and funds to battle breast cancer. The bases at The Joe on Saturday night will be pink and the RiverDogs will sell special, limited edition, pink baseballs with proceeds of the baseball sales benefiting the Charleston Breast Center. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game, which begins at 7:05 p.m.
Sunday is another Family Day presented by Charleston Parks & Recreation and the Charleston IMAX Theater. Family Sundays offer parents and children the opportunity to play catch on the field before the game, and kids are permitted to run the bases and secure autographs from RiverDogs players following the contest while outside of the ballpark free pony rides are offered to kids. The RiverDogs will again collect school supplies to benefit the Charleston County School District's First Day Festival. Fans who bring school supplies, valued at $5 or more per person, receive a free general admission ticket. Additionally, the RiverDogs will be kicking off a food drive with the Lowcountry Food Bank. Any fan who brings four canned items will receive a free general admission ticket to the game. The Lowcountry Food Bank distributes 10 million pounds of food annually and serves all ten coastal communities. Sunday's game is also presented by 105.5 The Bridge and the afternoon game is set for a 4:05 p.m. first pitch.
After the homestand, the RiverDogs will have only eight home games remaining. After an off day on Monday and four games at Greensboro, the RiverDogs return to The Joe on Saturday, August 19 to play the Savannah Sand Gnats.
