Hughes placed on temporary inactive list

(Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, announced today that RHP Philip Hughes will be placed on the Temporary Inactive list so he can participate in the Futures Game at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, PA on Sunday, July 9th. The Thunder also announced that RHP Scott Patterson has been transferred back to Trenton from Tampa.

Hughes, the number one rated prospect in the Yankees Minor League system according to Baseball America, is 5-3 with a 2.75 ERA in 12 starts for the Thunder during 2006. He has struck out 76 and walked 23 over 72 IP. Hughes started the season with Tampa, (High-A FSL) and was 2-3 with a 1.80 ERA in five starts while striking out 30 and walking just two. During 2005, Hughes went a combined 9-1 with a 2.19 ERA between Tampa and the Charleston River Dogs (Low-A SAL). Hughes was originally selected in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2004 draft.

Patterson, who is a recent addition to the bullpen, made five appearances for the Thunder before being sent back down to Tampa. In 7.2 innings pitched, the 26-year-old hurler holds a 4.70 ERA, with opposing batters hitting an average of .226 against him. He has recorded 11 strikeouts while allowing only one walk. Patterson spent his previous years in the independent leagues before breaking into the Yankees system this season.

The Thunder begin a series against the Binghamton Mets tonight at Waterfront Park. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Francisco Butto (1-1, 3.60) will take the ball for Trenton against Binghamton's Robert Paulk (3-2, 2.87).
