MILO HAMILTON AT THE BALLPARK
Longtime Astros' radio voice Milo Hamilton, enshrined into the broadcasters' wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992, will sign copies of his new book, Making Airwaves: 60 Years at Milo's Microphone, on Monday, May 8 at The Dell Diamond from 5:30-6:30pm. The Round Rock Express hosts the Omaha Royals at 7:05pm.
Milo Hamilton has been the radio voice of the Astros since 1985 and is a member of four Halls of Fame. The man who called Hank Aaron's record-breaking 715th home run has also worked for the Browns, Cardinals, White Sox, Cubs (twice), and Pirates. The Iowa native made his radio debut in Guam as an 18-year-old U.S. Navy seaman in 1945. He began his long career behind a big-league microphone eight years later. In 2006 he will work spring training, Astros home games, and two road trips. He is also a member of the exclusive Radio Hall of Fame, of which only nine other baseball broadcasters belong. Other honors include his 1994 induction into the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame and 2005 induction into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.
Millions of sports fans know the dulcet tones of Hamilton's melodious voice. They remember his call of baseball's most magic moment: the home run that made Aaron the new home run king in 1974. However, he was also behind the mike when Roger Maris hit his 61st home run in 1961 and when Stan Musial hit five home runs in one day. In 2005, Hamilton was the oldest active announcer to work the entire 162-game baseball schedule as the Astros marched to their first World Series appearance. In the book, he speaks frankly about his tenuous relationship with Harry Caray when the two were paired together in St. Louis during the mid-1950's and again in Chicago during the early 1980's. He also discusses his rocky relationship with former Astros broadcaster and manager Larry Dierker. The story he tells in Making Airwaves is a profile in courage, a tale of talent and determination, and a behind-the-scenes look at seven decades of baseball history.
Sports Publishing L.L.C., located in Champaign, Illinois, focuses on publishing sports autobiographies, biographies, encyclopedias, and histories. The hardcover Making Airwaves: 60 Years at Milo's Microphone will be available at the Round Rock Express book signing on Monday, May 8, with the signature from Baseball Hall of Famer Milo Hamilton making it a great addition to the library of any Astros and baseball fan
