BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost their first home game of the 2005-06 regular season by the score of 4-1 to the Portland Pirates Saturday. Darien, Connecticut native Ryan Shannon powered the visitors to the win with a pair of second-period, power-play goals, including the eventual game-winner.
After zipping through the first period-and-a-half with no scoring, the teams combined for three goals in an eight-minute span with Shannon scoring his team-leading fourth and fifth goals on back-to-back Portland advantages to make it 2-0 Pirates. Shannon's first goal came at 11:51 of the middle frame off assists from Ladislav Smid and Tim Brent. The second was an unassisted marker as he drifted in front of a clearing attempt by Sound Tigers netminder Wade Dubielewicz and knocked the puck into the net with his body. The second goal was also Shannon's team-leading eighth point of the year.
The Sound Tigers bounced right back into the game as Travis Brigley, making his debut with the team, scored with 8.5 ticks left in the second period off assists from Travis Smith, also in his first contest with the team, and Matt Koalska to cut the lead back to one at 2-1.
Portland regained the two-goal lead at 3-1 on the first goal of the season by Curtis Glencross off an assist from Simon Ferguson with 9:51 to play. The Pirates then added an empty-net, power-play goal with one tenth of a second left on the clock by Geoff Peters, his first marker of the year, with Ferguson and Smid collecting the assists.
Shannon was the first star of the game, Brigley the second and Portland netminder Nathan Marsters the third. Marsters made 23 saves to improve to 2-0 on the season while Dubielewicz made 32 stops. The Pirates were 3 for 10 on the power play and had a 36-24 shots on goal advantage. The Sound Tigers were 0 for 9 on the power play.
